Biography of Petronella van den Berg

Petronella van den Berg was born in the Netherlands where she attended the Academy of the Art in Zutphen and she apprenticed for over two years with some of Europe’s and Africa’s leading sculptors. In 2002 she immigrated to Canada and during that short time has participated in sculpture symposiums in the Okanagan, and her paintings and sculptures are exhibited across the region. Her works are in the homes of private collectors throughout Canada, USA and Europe. Petronella lives in Naramata, BC, where her Studio & Gallery: UNIQUE are located. She is a full-time acrylic and sculpture artist. Almost twenty years ago after painting several years, she found her true métier

“Sculpting is a great benefit for me and a welcome variation from painting. Training the hands to respond to the mind produces a fulfillment in itself”

The majority of her acrylic paintings are colorful. Primary colors are her first choice. Some of her paintings are figurative, but also abstract. The paintings and sculptures are free from theoretical or rational ideas. Everything is left to freedom of emotions and the moment. The interpretation is left entirely of the viewer. It might appear to be fantasy or impulse, but then you will discover a traceable relation to the current reality. Van den Berg enjoys art that feeds the soul and has a depth to it that goes beyond its physical presence. While working on a sculpture or painting, Petronella has a special relationship with the object she is creating, and the world around her seems to stop while the energy and the passion of creation overwhelm her. Petronella works mostly without sketches, but she uses her inner vision and photographic memory to guide her.

Artist Statement:

Emotions and personal experiences are the guides for Petronella’s sculptures and paintings. The nature of Petronella’s daily life also gives her ideas. All of her works are “one of a kind.” Her sculptures depict the human shape. She has also a passion to create pure abstract forms. She has created sculptures from Soapstone, Alabaster, Marble, Granite, Limestone, Pyrohyllite, African Wonder Stone and Serpentine.

The main artists who inspire Petronella are Constantin Brancusi, Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and the English painter J.M.W. Turner.
